But as the immediate emergency response phase reduces over time and vaccination rates increase, the department’s work to help the system recover and return to a new normal will gather pace. Work on COVID-19 will remain the single most important operational and policy focus for the whole department and the wider health and social care system. The pandemic will have lasting consequences for the health and demography of the nation, the economic, social and political context for our work, and the health and care system itself. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been the greatest challenge to our health and care system in living memory and its impact will continue throughout 2021 to 2022.
